There are now only 24 schools (out of the original 255) left in the 5A one-act play competition, and the Wildcats are one of those 24. Temple High School's UIL One-Act Play team advanced to the regional contest from the area contest held Friday, April 9, at Cedar Park High School.

Gloria Matthews was named Best Actress in the Area and Trenton Schneiders was named the Best Actor in the Area. Selected for the All-Star Cast were Maddie Kleypas and Kat Pasichnyk. Named to the Honorable Mention All-Star Cast were Reese Atkinson and Mikah Young. Joel Williams was named to the Area All-Star Crew.

Temple will compete at the Regional Contest on Friday, April 23, at Baylor University in the Hooper-Schaefer Fine Arts Center. Admission is $8 per person. Temple will perform around 2:40 p.m. and will be the third school to perform out of the six competitors. Two of the six schools will advance from Baylor to the state contest.

The approximate performance times, schools and plays include:
    1:00 -- Robert E. Lee High (Tyler), The Crucible
    1:50 -- Cypress Falls High, A Midsummer Night's Dream
    2:40 -- Temple High, Degas in New Orleans
    3:30 -- Cypress Creek High, The Cripple of Inishmaan
    4:20 -- Leander High, Picasso at Lapin Agile
    5:10 -- Creekview High (Carrollton), A View from the Bridge

(At Baylor last year, Cy Falls presented The Last Days of Judas Iscariot but did not advance. Cy Creek is the school that performed Pippin at the State Thespian Convention this year and is taking the show to the International Convention. Leander went to state last year with Armitage. Creekview went to state last year with Rabbit Hole. Tyler Lee was last at Baylor in 2008.)

The critic judge at Baylor will be David Stevens, who is the Director of Fine Arts for Keller ISD. During his nine years of directing UIL one-act plays, he made five appearances at the State Meet, winning two state championships and two first runner-ups. He taught at San Angelo Central, Highland Park and Southlake Carroll High Schools. He holds a BFA in Theatre Education from UT-Austin and an MFA in directing from Oklahoma University. He is currently pursuing a doctorate in educational administration.
