Temple High School concluded its production of Pride & Prejudice, which ran Wednesday-Friday, November 12-14 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, November 16 at 2 p.m. at the Cultural Activities Center, 3011 North 3rd, Temple. The show was performed at the CAC because of renovations to Temple High School's auditorium.
The romantic comedy is by Jon Jory and is based on the novel by Jane Austen. Tickets were $7 in advance and $10 at the door. The classic tale of love and misunderstanding unfolds in class-conscious England in the year 1813. The five Bennet sisters –- strong-willed Elizabeth (Stephanie Scherer), beautiful Jane (Emily Kleypas), bookish Mary (Corrie Hermans), immature Kitty (Kathryn Pasichnyk) and wild Lydia (Rachel Stonestreet) -- are well aware of their mother's (Stacy Henderson) fixation on finding them husbands and securing their futures. This is especially important because upon the death of Mr. Bennet (Earl Pope), the Bennet estate will be inherited by a distant cousin (Chris Burrow) because there is no male heir in the family. When wealthy bachelor Mr. Charles Bingley (Trenton Schneiders) takes up residence in a nearby mansion, the Bennets are abuzz, thinking that the man's sophisticated circle of friends will include many suitors for the Bennet sisters. His friends include the dashing (and richer) Fitzwilliam Darcy (Scott Ray). Love is soon in the air for one of the Bennet sisters, while another may have jumped to prejudgment. Many trials and tribulations stand between the sisters and their happiness, including class, gossip and scandal. Other characters include Mr. Darcy's cousin Colonel Fitzwilliam (Jared Straub), Elizabeth's best friend Charlotte (Gloria Matthews), Mr. Bingley's sister Caroline (Alexandra Tolleson), George Wickham (Dylan Johnston), Charlotte's father (John Patterson), the Bennet sister’s aunt and uncle (Shalyssa Wright and Josh Wilder), Lady Catherine de Bourgh (Elizabeth Pasichnyk), Housekeeper (Kara Kasberg) and Mr. Darcy's sister Georgiana (Emily Roeder). Dance guests and officers include Morgan Crozier, James Roeder and Greyson Wooten. Servants include Regan Allen, Shannon Graham, Allison Henderson, Brad Hickey, Tyler Winkler and Joshua Zepeda. Some of the CharactersMr. Bennet -- The father of the five Bennet girls, Mr. Bennet is a gentleman with a moderate income, by no means poor, but not nearly as wealthy as other characters. Mr. Bennet has a dry and sarcastic sense of humor, and does not always pay enough attention to his daughters’ behaviors. Because he has no son, his estate cannot be given to his daughters but must go to his male relative, Mr. Collins. Mrs. Bennet -- Mrs. Bennet is of a lower class than Mr. Bennet, having improved her position in life by marrying above her birth. She is the loud and uncouth mother of the five Bennet sisters. Mrs. Bennet’s only thought and ambition for any of her daughters is to see them married to wealthy men. Elizabeth Bennet -- Elizabeth (Lizzy, Eliza) is the heroine of the story and the second eldest of the five Bennet sisters. She is headstrong, opinionated and determined. Elizabeth is intelligent with a quick wit, but she is also quick to judge and holds fast to her opinions, even if they are not accurate. Jane Bennet -- The eldest, prettiest and most composed of the sisters, Jane is goodness personified. Her nature is so agreeable that she always looks for the best in everyone and every situation. Mary Bennet -- Mary is the bookish and philosophical middle sister, unconcerned by trivial entertainments such as dancing, flirting and socializing. Kitty Bennet -- Kitty is the second youngest, a flirty and silly girl whose concerns center chiefly on the officers stationed nearby. Lydia Bennet -- The youngest and most impetuous of the sisters, Lydia is both a flirt and an unreliable girl. Her choices cause a disruption that nearly ends any of the sisters’ prospects of finding a husband, much less one of any respectability. Mrs. Gardiner -- The loving and compassionate aunt of the Bennet sisters. Mr. Gardiner -- The equally kind, though lowly connected, uncle of the girls. Mr. Collins -- A cousin of Mr. Bennet and thus of the Bennet sisters as well. Mr. Collins is a pompous clergyman who, being Mr. Bennet’s closest male relative, will inherit his estate and property following Mr. Bennet’s death. Mr. Collins is looking for a wife and his eyes turn toward the Bennet sisters, particularly Elizabeth. Fitzwilliam Darcy -- A gentleman of great wealth and impeccable family history, Mr. Darcy’s position in society is decidedly above that of the Bennet family. His belief in the superiority of his lineage and position makes him arrogant and proud, but he is also a person of deep convictions and loyalties. Georgiana Darcy -- The quiet and reserved sister of Mr. Darcy, Georgiana is a sweet and easily influenced young woman. Lady Catherine De Bourgh -- The aunt of Mr. Darcy, Lady Catherine is a social snob, looking down on anyone who is not in her class. She is a rude and mean-spirited woman, determined to keep her nephew away from love if it means he will marry outside of his class. Colonel Fitzwilliam -- The nephew of Lady Catherine and cousin to Mr. Darcy, Colonel Fitzwilliam is a no-nonsense military man who shares guardianship of Georgiana Darcy with Mr. Darcy. Charles Bingley -- A sweet-tempered and good-hearted gentleman of less wealth than his good friend Darcy, but still very well off. He is much less concerned with social stature than Darcy, but he is easily influenced by the opinions of friends and family. Miss Bingley -- The sister of Mr. Bingley, Miss Bingley is an aristocratic snob, believing herself and her family to be much superior to everyone else. Sir William Lucas -- A relatively poor local gentleman, knighted though with no fortune. He and his family are neighbors of the Bennet family. Charlotte Lucas -- The eldest daughter of Sir William Lucas, she is Elizabeth’s best friend. Charlotte is practical and sensible, not at all romantic, but believing in marriage as a necessity rather than brought about by love. Wickham -- The dashing and charming lieutenant who is the son of the late Mr. Darcy’s steward. Wickham appears to be a good and decent man, but is actually conniving and greedy.
