Temple's entry into the 2010 UIL One-Act Play Contest will be Degas in New Orleans by Rosary O'Neill. The drama explores Degas' scandalous visit to New Orleans in 1872.
Edgar Degas, the French Impressionist painter, is struggling with the conflicts of helping his brother and Louisiana relatives in America, and pursuing a career as a painter. Fame and spiritability come to a head when he discovers he is still in love with his sister-in-law (who is pregnant and blind). Edgar struggles with ethical priorities when he discovers his aggressive, charming brother has gone through all the family money in an attempt to save his uncle's business.
The play, which has just been published by Samuel French, was invited to the New End Theatre (a heralded theater for contemporary plays) in London and featured in the Best New American Play Oktoberfest of the Ensemble Studio Theatre (a leading theater for new work) in New York City and in the Reading Series of the Abingdon Theatre and the Rattlestick Playwrights Theatre, New York.
The first round of competition (zone) will be Thursday, March 25 at Temple High. District competition is Thursday, April 1, at the Cultural Activities Center. Area contest is Friday, April 9, at Cedar Park High. Regional contest is Friday, April 23, at Baylor. State contest is May 6-8 at Bass Concert Hall in Austin.
In preparation for competition, Temple will attend four one-act play festivals: (1) Saturday, February 27, at Magnolia High, (2) Friday, March 5, at McLennan Community College, (3) Saturday, March 13, at Temple High, and (4) Saturday, March 20, at Cedar Park High. There will also be a retreat for the one-act play team on March 18 and 19. (The Cedar Park festival and the retreat both occur at the end of the Spring Break week.)
